Wuhan/Hankou

Hankou is in the western part of the city of Wuhan. This article includes all three administrative districts that were once part of the historic city of Hankou, namely the districts of Jiang'an, Jianghan and Qiaokou. For convenience sake, we also include the district of Dongxihu.

The port is also a departure point for short-distance evening pleasure cruises (which are much more frequent than cruises to Shanghai or Chongqing). The boats usually dock at Pier No. 23. There are also several travel agencies inside the center that can help you with bookings.

By ferry

Hankou can be reached from Wuchang by ferry. The main ferry route is between the Wuhan Customs House Wharf in Hankou and Zhonghua Road Wharf in Wuchang. The ferries on this route operate between 06:30 and 24:00 daily. The standard fare is ¥1.5. The fare is increased to ¥10 after 20:10. An express ferry service operates on the same route between 08:45 and 17:25. The fare for the express ferry is ¥5.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Hankou was home to concessions for five different countries; the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia and Japan. The British concession was the largest of the five and is the best preserved today, though there are still some surviving buildings in the remaining four concessions reflecting the architectural styles of those respective countries.

  • Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox Church Hankou Orthodox Church, 48 Poyang Road, Jiang'an District near the Tianjin Road intersection; about 1 km northeast of Jianghan Road Metro Station on Lines 2 and 6).Founded in 1876 to serve the local Russian community. In 1891, Russian prince Nicholas II (who would later become the last tsar of Russia) visited Wuhan and provided funding for the rebuilding of the church, which was completed in 1893. It is the oldest surviving Russian Orthodox church in China. As of late 2024, it hosts a photo exhibition summing up the history of Chinese–Russian tea trade, carefully explained in Mandarin and Russian (but no English).Free.
  • August 7th Meeting Site, August 7th Meeting Site Memorial Museum, 139 Poyang Street, Jiang'an District 1.1 km southeast of Dazhi Road Station on Metro Lines 1 and 6; there is a bus stop just outside the building - named Poyang Street & Lanling Road - which is served by bus no. 313; you can catch bus no. 313 from the Wuhan Museum of Science and Technology, ☏ +86 27 82835088,1927878877@qq.com. The August 7th Meeting was an emergency meeting of the CCP Central Committee, which was secretly convened at this site in 1927, just a few days after the Communist uprising in Nanchang sparked the beginning of the Chinese Civil War. The meeting was a major turning point in the history of the Party. At this meeting, the Party decided to abandon the conservative urban-based approach to revolution being promoted by the Soviet Union and instead adopt the more radical ideas of Mao Zedong. The site of the August 7th meeting is now a museum. Free.
  • Chenshia Museum, Diamond Art Museum, 1 Lugou Bridge Road, Jiang'an District 650 m in a straight line from Huangpu Road Station on Metro Lines 1 and 8, ☏ +86 27 82711616. Tu-Su 09:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00, no entry after 16:00, closed on Mondays. A private art museum established by Mr. Chen Dabing. The museum displays artworks from both Chinese and overseas artists. Free.
  • February 7th Memorial Museum, 2499 Jiefang Avenue, Jiang'an District 450 m northeast of Xuzhouxincun Station on Metro Line 1, ☏ +86 27 82934390. Daily 08:30-11:30, 14:00-17:00. Dedicated to the strike by workers on the Beijing-Hankou Railway between February 4th and February 7th, 1923, one of the biggest strikes in China during the early 20th century. The strike broke out in response to the warlord Wu Peifu's ban on the workers' trade union federation, which had held its inaugral meeting in Zhengzhou on February 1st. Wu Peifu responded to the strike on February 7th by ordering his troops to fire on the workers. Around 40 workers were killed and about 200 were injured. Casualties were recorded not only in Wuhan, but also in Zhengzhou, which has its own memorial to the incident. Free.
  • Former Residence of Song Qingling in Hankou, 162 Yanjiang Avenue, Jiang'an District 1.5 km southeast of Dazhi Road Metro Station on Lines 1 and 6; near the southern end of the Hankou Riverfront Park, ☏ +86 27 82296617, +86 27 82296638. Song Qingling, the wife of Sun Yat-Sen, lived here from 1926 to 1927 while working for the Kuomintang government. The residence has been restored to appear as it was when Song Qingling was here, and there are some old photographs on display. Free.
  • Former Residence of Zhang Tianyou, 65 Dongting Street, Jiang'an District about 1 km northeast of Jianghan Road Station on Metro Lines 2 and 6, and about 1 km southeast of Dazhi Road Station on Metro Lines 1 and 6; the closest bus stop is Poyang Street & Sanling Road, which is served by bus no. 313; the second closest bus stop is Shengli Street & Lanling Road, which is served by bus nos. 38, 313, 402, 520, 526, 548, 608, 707 and 801, ☏ +86 27 82844493. Zhang Tianyou (Jeme Tien-Yow) (1861-1919) was an outstanding engineer from Guangdong Province who is credited with being the 'father of China's railways'. He lived here from 1912 until his death in 1919. The mansion is open to the public and hosts an exhibition about Zhang's life. Free.
  • Former Site of Eighth Route Army Wuhan Office, Memorial Museum of Wuhan Office of Chinese Eighth Route Army, 57 Changchun Street, Jiang'an District about 420 m southeast of Huangpu Road Metro Station on Lines 1 and 8, ☏ +86 27 82735576. 09:00-17:00, no entry after 16:30, closed on Wednesdays. The Eighth Route Army was a Communist-controlled army unit nominally subordinate to the Kuomintang-led Chinese national army during the Second World War. The army's former office in Wuhan is now a museum with exhibits relating to the war. Free.
  • Former Site of Federation of Beijing-Hankou Railway Workers' Unions, 2185 Jiefang Avenue, Jiang'an District just outside Erqi Road Station on Metro Line 1, ☏ +86 27 82901914. Saily 09:00-17:00. Senior members of the Federation of Beijing-Hankou Railway Workers' Unions secretly convened at this office on February 4th, 1923 after the warlord Wu Peifu had forcibly closed down their office in Zhengzhou. It was here that they organised the famous strike that was violently suppressed by Wu Peifu's army on February 7th. Visitors interested in these events should also visit the February 7th Memorial Museum (listed above).Free.
  • Former Site of New Fourth Army Hankou Headquarters, 332 Shengli Street, Jiang'an District about 460 m southeast of Huangpu Road Metro Station on Lines 1 and 8, ☏ +86 27 82737255. 09:00-17:00, closed on Wednesdays. The New Fourth Army was the second of the two major Communist-controlled army units that fought during the Second World War. The New Fourth Army's former headquarters is just around the corner from the former site of the Eighth Route Army Wuhan Office, so the two sites are probably best visited together. Free.
  • Gude Temple, 74 Shanghuapo Road, Huangpu Street, Jiang'an District about 950 m south of Luojiazhuang Metro Station Line 3 and 1.2 km north of Huangpu Road Metro Station on Lines 1 and 8; access to the temple is via Gongnongbing Road; there is a bus stop just outside the temple, which is served by bus nos. 30 and 346, as well as trolleybus no. 3, ☏ +86 27 82907553. Daily 07:00-17:30. Established in 1874 and expanded in the early 20th century, the Gude Temple may not be as old as some of Wuhan's other temples, but it's well worth a visit due to the highly unusual building design, which successfully blends the architectural styles of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. From the outside, it looks a bit like a Christian church, but this is a Buddhist temple. The design was partially inspired by the Ananda Temple in Bagan, but is quite different from that temple.¥13.

Hankou Riverfront, Yanjiang Avenue, Jiang'an District a number of metro stations can be found about 1 km west of the waterfront; the closest one to the flood memorial is Sanyang Road Station on Lines 1 and 7), ☏ +86 27 82774567. Note the tall monument which, from far away, appears to be a monument to Mao Zedong, but which actually commemorates Wuhan's complicated relationship with its great river. Erected in 1969, it's inscribed with Mao's poem "Swimming" (which not only celebrates the Yangtze in Wuhan, but also foresees the creation of the mighty hydro dams farther upstream, and decorated with reliefs depicting the citizens fighting the flood of 1954.   • Hubei Electrical Power Museum, 22 Hezuo Road, Jiang'an District next door to Zhang Tianyou's former residence, ☏ +86 27 86607199. M-F 08:30-16:00, closed on weekends. The museum is housed inside a former British-owned power station that dates from 1905. At the time, it was one of the largest power-generating facilities in China. Free.
  • St. Joseph's Cathedral Shanghai Road Catholic Church, 16 Shanghai Road, Jiang'an District about 600 m east of Jianghan Road Metro Station on Lines 2 and 6, ☏ +86 27 82835723. Open daily. Wuhan's oldest and largest Catholic church. It was designed by an Italian missionary by the name of Angelus Vaudagna and completed in 1876. Free.
  • Wuhan Art Museum, 2 Baohua Street, Jiang'an District about 500 m north of Jianghan Road Metro Station on Lines 2 and 6, ☏ +86 27 82602713, postmaster@wuhanam.com. Tu-Su 09:00-17:00, no entry after 16:00, closed on Mondays. The museum is housed inside the former Jincheng Bank, a neoclassical building that dates from the 1930s. The building was used as a military headquarters by the Japanese during their occupation of the city in World War II.Free.

  • Wuhan Police Museum, 271 Shengli Street, Jiang'an District 780 metres southeast of Sanyang Road Metro Station on Lines 1 and 7).n-F 09:00-12:00, 14:00-16:30, closed on weekends. Has around 830 artefacts pertaining to the history of Wuhan's police. The museum is housed inside an old European style building, which was the police headquarters of Hankou's German Concession from 1909 to 1917. Visitors are required to make an appointment on WeChat under the account, which can be done at the spot. Free.
  • Wuhan Planning Exhibition Hall, Wuhan Citizens Home, 117 Jinqiao Avenue, Jiang'an District right outside the Wuhan Citizens Home Metro Station on Line 3, ☏ +86 27 85661111. Jianghan District

  • Dalin Museum for Sexology, Level 2, Tian'e Hotel, 285 Qingnian Road, Jianghan District 730 m north of Wangjiadun East Station on Metro Lines 2 and 3; 730 m south of Fanhu Station on Metro Line 2, ☏ +86 27 83605116. Daily 09:00-16:30. One of the very few sex museums in China. Founded by Liu Dalin, a sexology professor from Shanghai University. Displays a wide variety of erotic artefacts from China's past.¥50.
  • Former Site of Wuhan Nationalist Government, 708 Zhongshan Avenue, Jianghan District a short distance east of Liudu Station on Metro Line 6), ☏ +86 27 85663790. Tu-Su 09:00-17:00, no entry after 16:30, closed on Mondays. It was built in 1917 for the Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Company. From January to September 1927, the building served as the seat of power for the Wuhan Nationalist Government, a government led by a left-wing faction of the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), which briefly operated independently of Chiang Kai-Shek's government. A museum on the 3rd floor of the building explains the history. The bell of the European style building is still in use and chimes every hour from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 21:00. Free.

A major museum on the edge of Houxiang River Park. Free.[Zhongshan Park](http://www.zhongshanpark.com/, 1265 Jiefang Avenue, Jianghan District Exits C, D and E, Zhongshan Park Metro Station, Line 2, ☏ +86 27 85780746. Park opening hours: 06:30-23:30, amusement park opening hours: May-Oct 09:00-18:00, Nov-Apr 09:30-17:30. One of China's oldest modern parks. It was established in 1910 as a private garden and brought into public ownership in 1927. Shortly afterwards, it was renamed Zhongshan Park in memory of Sun Yat-Sen, founder of China's first republic. The park features a number of old pavilions, bridges and other structures from the early 20th century. In the middle of the park is a statue of Sun Yat-Sen and his wife Song Qingling. On the left side of the statue is a building where Japanese forces stationed in Hubei formally surrended to the Chinese government in 1945. That building is now a museum dedicated to the event. There is a small amusement park on the northern side of the park. Entry to the park is free. The amusement park charges ¥10 to ¥20 for each ride.

Qiaokou District

Daily 08:30-17:30 (hours are typically extended for special events such as the lantern festival), no entry after 17:00. This is a large (a mile across) exhibition grounds on Wuhan's northwestern outskirts. Constructed from scratch on the site of a former landfill, it opened in the fall of 2015 for the 10th China (Wuhan) International Garden Expo (2015. There are two large exhibition buildings on site; at the time (Nov 2015) one has a garden expo running, the other has exhibits from the collections of various museums (jade carvings, coins, furniture, porcelain, etc.) The rest of the grounds are landscaped, divided into a hundred or so themed sections: a dozen or so dedicated to various foreign countries, the rest, to various cities of China. Overall, although the landscaping is nice, one can visit plenty of similarly nice landscaped sites for free (or for a nominal admission fee) elsewhere in Wuhan, in city parks or on university campuses. The most crowded place at the site seems to be the huge, but rather overpriced cafeteria (which is also divided into themed sections, dedicated to various regions' cuisine). Many visitors choose to bring their own snacks - there are plenty of benches around the site for picnicking! The expo ended in May 2016, but the garden remains open to visitors.¥60 (standard adult ticket), ¥30 (children aged from 6 to 18 and adults aged between 60 and 65). Children under 6 years of age and adults over 65 can get in for free.

Performing arts venues

*, Jiqing Folk Street, Jiang'an District walk there from Jianghan Road Station on Metro Lines 2 & 6 or Xunlimen Station on Metro Lines 1 & 2).An ordinary-seeming street by day, becomes transformed by night into a bewildering maze of streetside restaurants and buskers performing music, dance, opera and stand-up comedy. It is a strongly-recommended experience. Food is plentiful and cheap, and it features a lot of unique local cuisine. The performances can be enjoyed by proxy as performers work other tables or they can be purchased. One can expect to pay about ¥10 per song performed. Other performances are more based on contributions—the more you contribute, the longer the performers will do their routines and the more daring/interesting/funny the routines will be.

Conference and exhibition centers

Malls

Jianghan Road Pedestrian Mall, jianghan District, Hankou Jianghan Road Metro Station on Lines 2 and 6 or Xunlimen Metro Station on Lines 1 and 2, ☏ +86 27 82753768. Of potential interest to a visitor, a pedestrian mall almost as long as Shanghai's famed East Nanjing Road. During the day it is an interesting look at rampant consumerism in China's rapidly-growing middle class. At night, starting at 19:00, it is the same but is expanded on each side a few blocks deep by a night market with literally thousands of little stalls hawking every variety of goods imaginable: makeup, souvenirs, clothing, housewares, food, music, movies, etc.

As of 2019, Muse Club and Soho Bar are highlights. Venues generally close between 02:00-04:00, later on holidays such as Western New Years Eve. Wuchang residents can stay to 06:00 and catch the ferry across the river for breakfast at Hubu Lane.
