How a foreign visitor actually books it
The museum's own visitor notice states it operates fully on 'online real-name ticket purchase with on-site ID-card check' and tells visitors to bring their original second-generation resident ID card. It names no other document — no passport, no travel permit — so we cannot say a passport works, and we will not assume it. Ask at the visitor service desk (021-62620116) before you build a day around it.
What else to know
A branch of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, and much the better of the two for a short visit. Adult ¥30, over-60s ¥25, students and children over 1.3m ¥12; under-1.3m or under-6 free, as are over-70s. Open 09:00-17:00 with last entry 16:00, closed Tuesdays except public holidays. The 4D cinema is a separate ¥30 and the fossil-dig area for 1.0-1.3m children books on the day from 08:35. Address: 510 West Beijing Road, inside Jing'an Sculpture Park — metro line 13 to Natural History Museum station puts you at the door. If the official channel does not work
The two reliable fallbacks are your hotel front desk, which books these through domestic apps every day, and the on-site manual window where one still exists. What does not work is buying from someone who approaches you or from a marketplace listing: entry is real-name, so a ticket registered to another person’s ID will not admit you. The mechanics are in buying tickets the official way and booking without WeChat.
