Do you need to book Xianshi Ancient Town in advance?

No — Xianshi Ancient Town in Zigong does not need an advance reservation. Buy at the gate or walk in, depending on whether the site charges at all. That makes it one of the sights you can leave to the day, which is worth knowing when the rest of a China itinerary has to be booked a week out.

What else to know

We link no official booking page here — the old town itself is free to wander, so there's no entry ticket to book (individual buildings or boat rides inside may charge separately). Xianshi (仙市古镇) is a more-than-1,400-year-old former salt-transport port on the Fuxi River about 11 km southeast of the city in Yantan District, once billed as 'China's number-one salt-shipping town' — late-Qing and early-Republican lanes, merchant houses, guild halls and temples, far less reconstructed than most Chinese 'ancient towns.' It's the honest counterweight to the museums: this is where the salt actually left town by boat. Reach it by taxi or DiDi (simplest), or local bus toward Yantan; open all hours since it's a living town.

What to still watch for

No reservation does not mean no friction. Carry your passport — it is the ID checked wherever one is checked, and a photo of it is not accepted. Where there is a paid gate, expect the counter to want a domestic payment app rather than a card, which is worth setting up before you land. And anyone approaching you outside with tickets is selling something you do not need here — the sights that genuinely sell out are the ones with a reservation rule, listed in Reservation Radar.
