A passport works. The museum's visitor rules name five accepted ID types for the real-name booking and a passport is one of them, alongside the mainland ID card, the Hong Kong/Macao and Taiwan travel permits and the foreign permanent-residence card. The one difference that matters on the day: ID-card holders clear the gate by face-matching at the turnstile, while anyone who booked on a passport goes through the STAFFED lane instead and shows the original document — so do not queue at the automatic gates and do not leave your passport in the hotel safe. Booking itself is Chinese-only and runs inside WeChat: follow the 河南博物院 official account and use 我要预约, or open the 河南博物院智慧导览 mini-program and use 参观预约.
Admission is free, and that is exactly why the booking matters: capacity is capped, so the reservation is the ticket. The museum states plainly that it has not authorised any third-party platform for ticketing — anyone selling you a slot is selling something they do not have. Open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00-20:30, last entry 19:30, closed Mondays; the unusually late closing is genuinely useful on an evening arrival. Booking slots are 09:00-12:00, 12:00-16:00 and 16:00-19:30. Miss out on a main-hall slot and there is a real fallback the museum publishes itself: the Western Xia exhibition in the east wing needs no reservation, and the extended-hours tickets for the main hall are released at 14:00 the same day. What to order, where locals actually queue, and the food-street traps to skip.
The dish the city is known for, and it is a soup rather than a stir-fry. Lamb and lamb bones are boiled hard and long until the stock turns white and opaque; the dough is worked, rested and then pulled by hand into broad strips of deliberately uneven width, which is what gives the noodles their bite. Day-lily buds, wood-ear fungus and vermicelli go in with the meat, and coriander and chilli come separately at the table so you build it yourself. It is a cold-weather dish that the city eats year-round, it is cheap, and it is one of the few things you can order by pointing.
Zhengzhou sits at the geographic centre of the country and gets food from everywhere, which means the safe move is not the imitation Western or Korean places but a busy noodle shop with a queue. The wider problem in Zhengzhou is the same as anywhere in China — the counter wants a domestic payment app, not your card — so set that up before you arrive rather than at the till.

Henan Museum charges nothing and caps numbers, so the reservation is the ticket. There is no web form and no counter you can rely on: both official channels live inside WeChat, in Chinese. The good news, which the museum states outright and almost nobody repeats, is that a passport is one of the five accepted ID types — you are not locked out by policy. What changes for you is the gate: ID-card holders face-match at the turnstile, passport holders go through the staffed lane with the original document. So the obstacle here is the booking interface, not the door, and the reliable workaround is the usual one — have your hotel front desk make the reservation the day before, then bring the passport you booked with.
Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport is one of the 65 designated ports for China's 240-hour visa-free transit, and Henan is one of the provinces covered in full rather than partly — so entering here does not confine you to the city, and you may cross into the permitted areas of the other regions in the scheme. Zhengzhou is a national rail hub — six railway stations, six high-speed lines, nine metro lines — and its real value to a traveller is what it puts within an hour. Luoyang, Kaifeng and Dengfeng, where the Shaolin Temple actually is, all have their own guides here, and all of them are a short high-speed hop. Plan the museum and an evening in Zhengzhou, and put the days elsewhere. Saying so is more useful than inflating a transport city into a destination.
