China, province by province

We cover destinations in 27 Chinese provinces and autonomous regions — 205 places in total, covering 343 attractions that require an advance real-name reservation. Each province page lists its cities, what needs booking there and which sights accept a foreign passport, with the verification date attached.

A province appears here only when we have verified at least two destinations in it, so this is an index of what we actually checked rather than a map of China. 17 of our 222 destination guides sit outside it: 5 belong to municipalities rather than provinces, and 12 carry no province we have resolved from a source we trust — mostly mountains, scenic areas and canal towns (Hengshan, Wuyishan, Jiuzhaigou, Wuzhen) that our sources locate by landscape, plus Xi'an. We would rather leave a place ungrouped than file it under the wrong province, which is exactly the mistake this data layer was built to stop making.

The four municipalities

Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing sit directly under the central government. They are cities in their own right, not provinces with cities inside them, so they have a city guide instead of a province page.

Every destination in one alphabetical list is at all cities. Every sight we have verified as needing an advance reservation is in the booking index, and the release-time tracker is Reservation Radar.
